A Sermon on Spiritual Living in a Physical World
Opening Scripture
2 Corinthians 5:7 – “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Introduction
In a world that demands evidence, proof, and tangible results, God calls His people to live differently. Today we explore what it means to walk by faith when everything around us appeals to our physical senses.
I. THE NATURE OF OUR SPIRITUAL EXISTENCE
A. God is Spirit (John 4:24)
Jesus told the Samaritan woman: “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:20-25)
We cannot see God with our physical eyes, yet He is more real than anything we can touch
Our relationship with God transcends the physical realm
B. Christianity is Fundamentally Spiritual (Romans 8:9)
“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you”
As believers, we have been transformed from purely physical beings to spiritual beings
We now possess both a physical body and a spiritual nature
II. THE TENSION: LIVING SPIRITUALLY IN A PHYSICAL WORLD
A. The Physical Demands of Life
We still need food, shelter, and provision for our bodies
Our daily routines involve tangible, visible activities
Society operates on what can be seen, measured, and proven
B. The Danger for Believers
Many believers are walking by sight instead of faith
We can become so focused on physical needs that we neglect spiritual realities
The temptation is to trust only what we can see and control
C. The Challenge
How do we honor our physical needs while prioritizing our spiritual walk?
How do we trust an invisible God in a visible world?
III. WHAT IT MEANS TO WALK BY FAITH
A. Faith Sees the Unseen
Faith recognizes spiritual realities that eyes cannot perceive
Faith trusts God’s promises even when circumstances suggest otherwise
Faith acts on God’s word rather than on feelings or appearances
B. Faith vs. Sight Living
Walking by Sight:
Making decisions based only on what we can see
Trusting in our own understanding and abilities
Being driven by fear when circumstances look difficult
Measuring God’s love by our current situation
Walking by Faith:
Trusting God’s character even when we can’t see His plan
Making decisions based on God’s promises, not just present circumstances
Finding peace in God’s presence even during trials
Believing God is working even when we can’t see how
IV. PRACTICAL STEPS TO WALKING BY FAITH
A. Daily Spiritual Disciplines
Prayer: Communicating with the God we cannot see
Bible Study: Feeding our spirit with God’s word
Worship: Acknowledging God’s presence and power
B. Shifting Our Perspective
Ask “What is God doing?” not just “What do I see happening?”
Remember God’s faithfulness in the past
Focus on God’s promises for the future
C. Living with Spiritual Vision
Make decisions through the lens of eternity
Seek God’s will before acting on our own understanding
Trust God’s timing even when it doesn’t make sense to us
V. THE BLESSING OF FAITH-WALKING
A. Peace in Uncertainty
When we walk by faith, we have peace even when we don’t have answers
Our confidence rests in God’s character, not our circumstances
B. Spiritual Growth
Faith-walking deepens our relationship with God
We learn to depend on God rather than ourselves
Our spiritual sensitivity increases
C. Witness to Others
Others see something different in believers who walk by faith
Our trust in an invisible God becomes a testimony to His reality
Conclusion
The call to walk by faith, not by sight, is not a call to ignore physical reality. Rather, it’s an invitation to see beyond the physical to the spiritual truths that govern all of life. Yes, we need food for our bodies, but we also need faith for our souls. Yes, we live in a physical world, but we serve a spiritual God who is actively working in and through that world.
The question for each believer today is: Will you trust what you can see, or will you trust the God you cannot see?
Closing Prayer
Lord, help us to walk by faith and not by sight. In a world that demands proof, help us to trust in Your promises. When circumstances look impossible, remind us that You are still God. Strengthen our faith and help us to live as the spiritual beings You have made us to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
