Teaching Guide:
Moses and God’s Signs
June 12/25

By Apostle Jean Mulovery

Scripture Overviews

In this passage, Moses continues his conversation with God at the burning bush. Moses expresses doubts about whether the Israelites will believe that God sent him, so God gives Moses three miraculous signs to prove His power and authority.

Main Themes for Children

God gives us what we need to do His work

God is patient with our fears and doubts

God’s power is greater than any problem

We can trust God even when we feel
inadequate

Verse-by-Verse Breakdown

Verse 1: Moses’ Concern

“Moses answered, ‘What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, “The Lord did not appear to you”?’”

Teaching Point:

Moses was worried that people wouldn’t believe him. Sometimes we worry about what others will think too. This is normal, and God understands our concerns.

Verses 2-5: The Staff Becomes a Snake

God asks Moses what’s in his hand (a staff), tells him to throw it down, and it becomes a snake. When Moses picks it up by the tail, it becomes a staff again.

Teaching Point:

God can use ordinary things (like Moses’ walking stick) to do extraordinary things. God can use us too, even when we feel ordinary.

Verses 6-8: The Leprous Hand

God tells Moses to put his hand in his cloak. When he pulls it out, it’s white with leprosy. When he puts it back and pulls it out again, it’s healed.

Teaching Point:

God has power over sickness and health. He can heal and restore what seems impossible to fix.

Verses 9-10:

Water to Blood & Moses’ Speech Concern

God says if they don’t believe the first two signs, Moses can pour Nile water on the ground and it will become blood. Moses then says he’s not good at speaking.

Teaching Point:

God had a plan for every objection Moses raised. When we feel we’re not good enough, God has already thought of that too.

Key Lessons for Children

  1. God is Patient with Our Worries

Moses asked “What if…” questions, and God didn’t get angry
God listened and provided solutions
It’s okay to bring our worries to God

  1. God Gives Us Tools and Signs

The staff, hand, and water were tools God gave Moses

God gives us abilities, talents, and resources too

We should look for what God has already put in our hands

  1. God’s Power is Amazing

Turning a staff into a snake and back
Healing leprosy instantly
Changing water to blood
God can do things that seem impossible

  1. We Don’t Have to Be Perfect

Moses wasn’t a good speaker, but God still chose him

God can use our weaknesses for His glory
Our limitations don’t limit God

Discussion Questions for Children

Why do you think Moses was worried about people not believing him?

What was in Moses’ hand that God used?

What do you have in your hands that God could use?

Which sign do you think was the most amazing? Why?

Moses said he wasn’t good at speaking. What are some things you don’t feel good at? How might God still use you?

How do you think Moses felt when he saw these miracles?

Activities and Applications

Object Lesson: “What’s in Your Hand?”

Have each child hold something simple (pencil, toy, book)

Discuss how God can use ordinary things for extraordinary purposes

Share examples of how their talents/interests could serve God

Role Play

Act out the scene with one child as Moses and another as God

Use a stick or ruler as the “staff”

Emphasize Moses’ feelings and God’s patience

Memory Verse

“The Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ ‘A staff,’ he replied.” – Exodus 4:2

Craft Ideas

Make “miracle sticks” decorated with reminders of God’s power

Create a simple flip book showing the staff/snake transformation

Life Application

For Younger Children (Ages 4-7)

God loves us and wants to help us

We can talk to God about our worries

God can do amazing things

God can use us to help others

For Older Children (Ages 8-12)

When we feel scared or unsure, we can remember God’s power

God equips us for the tasks He gives us

Our weaknesses don’t disqualify us from serving God

We should look for ways God wants to use our talents

Prayer Points

Thank God for being patient with our fears and questions

Ask God to help us see how He wants to use us

Pray for courage to trust God even when things seem impossible

Ask God to show us “what’s in our hands” that He can use

Additional Notes for Parents/Teachers

Emphasize God’s character: patient, powerful, and caring

Help children connect this to their own lives and abilities

Encourage questions – just like Moses asked questions

Remind them that God still does amazing things today, even if they look different from these miracles
